NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says an inmate has suffered a seizure and died.

The sheriff’s office identified the inmate as 40-year-old Jason Pierce, who was pronounced dead at a hospital about noon Wednesday.

Pierce had been processed into the jail Tuesday evening and was assigned to housing on an open dormitory unit. A sheriff’s spokesman said late Wednesday that Pierce was facing four counts of burglary and theft and had warrants from other jurisdictions. He was being held on $25,000 bond.

The sheriff’s office says the deputy on duty Wednesday on Pierce’s pod saw him in distress and called for medical assistance. Emergency officials administered aid to Pierce before he was transported to the hospital.
