SPOKANE, Wash. — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy who was rescued from the Spokane River has died at a local hospital.

Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer says the boy wasn’t breathing when rescue crews found him. He tweeted late Tuesday that the boy had died.

KREM-TV reports that the boy was playing disc golf with his parents at the Downriver Disc Golf Course when he fell into the river near the eighth hole Tuesday night.

Fire and police crews from Spokane and Spokane Valley responded and found the boy in the river about a mile from the course.

They pulled him out of the water. He was rushed to Sacred Heart Medical Center.
