Annual summer music event Bustock kicks off

Summer is heating up, which means it’s time for some sizzling good music at the annual Bustock Music Festival.

A Seymour rock band and groups paying tribute to Tom Petty and ZZ Top are set to perform during the free two-day event Friday and Saturday at the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts in Seymour.

Sponsored by Radio 96.3 WJAA, Bustock is the area’s biggest summer music festival and “two magical nights of peace, fun, art and free live music,” said Robert Becker, owner and manager of the radio station.

It started as a publicity stunt and has turned into a much-loved community event that helps promote local talent, Becker said.

This year’s Bustock was cut to two days instead of four because Friday and Saturday nights always pull in the biggest crowds and the festival didn’t want to compete with Thursday night’s Seymour CityJam concert in downtown Seymour.

The festival is for all ages and is family friendly. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and coolers.

Food will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for Jackson County Special Olympics.

The good times kick off at 7 p.m. Friday on the art center’s outdoor stage with Restless Leg String Band, a bluegrass band from Lexington, Kentucky, followed by Those Darn Torpedoes, a Tom Petty tribute band and the 50th anniversary Summer of Love Drum Circle.

On Saturday, These Fine Gentlemen of Seymour will kick off the show at 7 p.m. and Eliminator, a ZZ Top tribute band from Chicago will close out the night. There also will be a children’s beard decorating contest and a best beard contest for adults on Friday.
