Eli “Sammy” Deaton, 78, of Crothersville passed away at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Seymour Crossing in Seymour.

Born Sept. 7, 1938, in Perry County, Kentucky, he was the son of Estill and Mary Brewer Deaton. On Feb. 12, 1979, in Seymour, he married Phyllis Jaynes Deaton, who survives in Crothersville.

Sammy retired from Panasote and was a member of Victory Tabernacle Church in Uniontown.

He took pride in his garden and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was well known for singing in the gospel band Sons of Faith, played several different instruments and recorded an album, “Shine Down.”

Other survivors include a son, Ervin Wayne Deaton of Crothersville; stepdaughter, Cheryl (Dave) Helton of Seymour; granddaughters, Katelin Deaton and Kaylee Deaton, both of Kurtz; stepgrandchildren, Rhonda Gibson of Sellersburg, Ryan Wilbur, serving in the U.S. Navy in Japan, Shawna Coomer of Austin and Amber Wilbur of Seymour; sister, Anna Mae Deaton of Retreat; brothers, Bill (Jessie) Deaton of Uniontown, Chester Deaton of Reddington, and Jerry (Clara) Deaton of Bedford.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Earl Deaton; sister, Hazel Prewitt; and stepson, Greg Wilbur.

Pastor Kelly Reed will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Adams Family Funeral Home in Crothersville with burial at Uniontown Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
