URBANA, Ohio — Franklin University officials say they’ve received approval to make Urbana University in western Ohio a branch campus of the Columbus school starting in August.

The change will bring Urbana under Franklin’s accreditation after the application was approved by the Higher Learning Commission. Urbana will retain its name but will now be described as a branch campus or division of Franklin University.

The shift will allow the Urbana campus to offer new academic programs and sports, and Urbana’s probation status will be lifted.

Franklin University acquired Urbana and its assets in 2014 after the university faced serious financial troubles.
