Moving Vietnam Wall coming to Columbus

0

The Moving Vietnam Wall will be coming to the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds at Columbus for a five-day stay beginning Thursday.

The wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, has been touring the country for more than 30 years and recognizes veterans from all conflicts beginning with World War II.

Special sessions with guest speakers are planned each day with the first set for 6 p.m. Thursday. Others are planned for noon and 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each will feature special music by Southern Indiana Pipes & Drums.

The wall includes an information center to help visitors locate names on the wall and a National Guard recruiting center with military assets on display.

A Vietnam Huey helicopter will be on display and available for rides — weather permitting — from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. World War II and Korean War veterans may fly for free, while Vietnam vets can pay a $75 membership fee to fly. Others may take the 15-minute flight for $100.

Activities include an inflatable obstacle course and there will be an American Red Cross truck with snacks and water. Saturday will be Biker Days with a motorcycle ride.

American Legion Post 24 in Columbus is sponsoring the visit and is trying to raise $64,000 for the project. To donate, visit youcaring.com/2017movingwallmemorialcolumbusindiana-684321.
