BURLINGTON, Vt. — Burlington Electric is warning of a phone scam is targeting its customers.
Spokesman Mike Kanarick said a new wave of calls on Saturday is threatening to disconnect customers if they don’t pay up immediately.
Kanarick said the calls are not from Burlington Electric and customers should hang up.
Attorney General T.J. Donovan has launched a “Scam Buster” campaign to raise public awareness. Stores including CVS and Walmart have agreed to put up posters and asked employees to be alert to people buying prepaid cards to pay utility bills.
Kanarick said Burlington Electric does not demand credit card information or alternate payment mechanisms from customers. Customers who receive a call should contact Burlington Electric’s customer service at 802-865-7300 to report it.
