OWENSBORO, Ky. — Owensboro officials are discussing the creation of a permanent memorial to honor former world champion motorcycle racer and Owensboro native Nicky Hayden, who died earlier this year.
Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson said discussions began recently about how the community could memorialize Hayden, who was 35 when he died in May after being hit by a car while training on his bicycle in Italy.
In a MotoGP career spanning 2003-2016 with Honda and Ducati, Hayden posted three victories and 28 podium finishes in 218 races. He won the MotoGP title in 2006.
The Messenger-Inquirer reports Watson said many details are being worked out and more information will be released in coming weeks.
