The cause of death of a 37-year-old man found in the garage of a burning home on Seymour’s west side Monday evening remains under investigation, police report.

Nicholas East of Seymour, however, did not die of smoke inhalation or burns from the fire at the home at 316 Kessler Blvd., Police Chief Bill Abbott said Wednesday. However, he said investigators do not suspect foul play in East’s death.

Abbott said investigators are still awaiting additional information from an autopsy performed Tuesday at Woodlawn Family Funeral Centre in Seymour and toxicology results. The autopsy showed East had burns on his body from before his death, Abbott said.

He said after reviewing police body cameras, the fire appears to have started in East’s bedroom in the one-story, wood-frame home he was buying on contract.

East’s roommate, 37-year-old Crystal Beem, was removed from the home before the blaze consumed much of the house thanks to the actions of three neighbors, Seymour Police Department Cpl. Devin Cornwell said.

Beem was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services. She then was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for further treatment before being released.
