A special two-day youth deer hunt event has been scheduled for Nov. 3 and 4 at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge near Madison.

To apply, send a postcard postmarked by Oct. 1 with the youth’s name and address to: Big Oaks NWR, 1661 W. JPG Niblo Road, Madison, IN 47250.

A total of 150 youth (17 or under) will be selected by lottery Oct. 2, and each youth will be notified by mail thereafter.

Those youth drawn can attend an optional deer hunting luncheon/workshop by the Indiana Deer Hunter Association and Big Oaks Conservation Society on Nov. 3 and a one-day firearm deer hunt Nov. 4.

Hunt areas can be reserved by youth Nov. 3 during the workshop. The youth must have an adult as a guide, and the youth will be the only one allowed to hunt.

The youth and guide must attend a refuge safety briefing, and the youth’s acknowledgement of danger form also must be signed by a responsible adult.

The refuge will follow state regulations with regard to hunter safety requirements for youth.
