A 52-year-old Jackson County man faces charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm and aggravated battery after an incident of road rage Saturday evening north of Salem, police report.

Robert J. Abner Jr. of Vallonia was booked into the Washington County Jail in Salem after the incident reported, at 8:37 p.m. at Delaney Park and Nicholson Hollow roads, according to a news release from Sgt. Jerry D. Goodin.

That incident left Devin Roll, 24, of Salem with a wound to his left leg, said Goodin, public information officer for the Sellersburg post.

Roll and Abner’s wife, Anita Abner, were both flown by air ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Goodin said. Before his arrest, Robert Abner was treated at St Vincent’s Hospital in Salem also for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation that led to Robert Abner’s arrest began when Abner, who was driving a full-size pickup, and Roll, who was driving a motorcycle, became involved in a incident of road rage on State Road 135 near Salem, Goodin said.

The incident came to a head at Delaney Park and Nicholson Hollow roads north of Salem, after the two men exited their vehicles and began fist fighting, Goodin said.

At some point during the scuffle, Anita Abner became involved and was injured, Goodin. Also during the fight, Robert Abner retrieved a handgun during the fight.

When Washington County deputies arrived, they found a male subject identified as Roll lying in a ditch next to the roadway and both Abners.

Washington County officers then contacted the Indiana State Police to assist with the investigation. An Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigator and detective arrived at the scene.

Personnel with Washington County EMS, Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department and Indiana Department of Conservation also assisted.
