WILMINGTON, Del. — Nearly 100 businesses and non-profit organizations got free trash pickup for years — if not decades — in Delaware’s largest city.
The News Journal in Wilmington reported Monday that the city has likely lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result.
The organizations somehow landed on the city’s list of addresses for free trash and recyclable collection. Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki announced that they’ll need to hire a private collection service by Jan. 1.
The recipients of the free services include a range of groups. Among them are The Police Athletic League of Wilmington, the Wilmington Drama League and apartment complexes like The Square at Trolley.
Some may have landed on the list because of personal relationships. But Purzycki suspects most cases were added in good faith.
