ELIZABETH, N.J. — Authorities say a retired police officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly assaulted and tried to rob him.

Union County prosecutors say the shooting occurred around 5 a.m. Wednesday at a 24-hour car wash in Elizabeth.

They say 23-year-old Krishad Jones, of Newark, physically assaulted the retired Newark officer just before the shooting occurred. Jones was taken to a hospital and remains there in police custody, but further details about his injuries were not disclosed.

The retired officer’s name was not released. Authorities have not said if he was seriously injured.

Jones was charged with robbery. It’s not known if he’s retained an attorney.
