SPAFFORD, N.Y. — Authorities say they’ve recovered the body of a central New York man who apparently drowned while swimming in one of the Finger Lakes.

State police say the 38-year-old man was with a friend on a fishing boat on Skaneateles (skin-ee-AT’-luhs) Lake around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when he decided to go for a swim. The friend says the man had been in the water for several minutes when he went below the surface and didn’t come back up.

The friend called 911. Troopers and local volunteer fire departments responded.

Divers found his body later Wednesday morning. Police say he was from Lafayette, just south of Syracuse.

The man’s death is being investigated.
