FORT MADISON, Iowa — Officials in the southeastern corner of Iowa say an arrest has been made in the killing of a man whose body was discovered in a park in February.

The Lee County Sheriff’s said Friday in a news release that 35-year-old Joseph Mayorga Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 47-year-old James Merlin Nelson.

Nelson’s body was found Feb. 11 in Indian Path Park in north Lee County. An autopsy showed he had been killed by a gunshot to the head.

Officials say Mayorga has been in custody since shortly after Nelson’s death on unrelated charges. It was not clear whether he had an attorney on the murder charge filed Friday.
