COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina woman has killed a nearly 13-foot alligator as part of the state’s annual hunt for the reptiles.

The State newspaper reports that 37-year-old Laura Robinson Griffin of Belton was hunting alligator for the first time at Lake Moultrie north of Charleston. At 4-foot-10, she’s about one-third as tall as the alligator was long.

Griffin was in a boat and hunting with about 10 other hunters on Sept. 9, including her husband who is a seasoned alligator hunter. She said she had to shoot the alligator with her handgun three times.

The family says they have enough alligator meat to last them for a year now. On the menu are cubed alligator bites and grilled alligator filets.
