VICKSBURG, Miss. — A Mississippi sheriff says a 21-year-old woman who was shot in the chest is expected to recover and that her boyfriend was charged.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace tells WAPT-TV that 22-year-old Chase Hanes was handling a gun when it went off and shot his girlfriend while they were in a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

Pace says the woman was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Her name has not been released.

Hanes was charged with aggravated assault and was released from jail on Thursday after posting a $5,000 bond. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
