BEAUMONT, Texas — A special prosecutor in Southeast Texas has dropped a charge of abuse of official capacity that had been lodged last year against a former judge.
State District Judge John Stevens told the Beaumont Enterprise that he trusts and supports the decision by special prosecutor Josh Schaffer to end the felony case.
Stevens had appointed Schaffer as the prosecutor in the case against former Judge Layne Walker.
A grand jury had indicted Walker last year on allegations he used a government computer, printer and workers for personal gain from 2005 to 2014.
Walker told the Enterprise the case was a “political witch hunt.”
He was a district judge in Jefferson County from 2003 to 2014 when he resigned to take a private sector job.
