ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Authorities say the former civilian tow lot manager for the Atlantic City Police Department stole roughly $80,000 in lot fees.

Atlantic County prosecutors say Dennis Bell Sr., a former city resident who now lives on Laurel, Maryland, is charged with official misconduct and theft.

Bell oversaw the collection of toll lot storage fees and allegedly took the money over a two-year period. The charges announced Friday stem from an investigation that began when the city’s office of revenue and finance found discrepancies in the tow lot finances and reported it to police.

Bell had worked for the city since 2000. He had been suspended without pay and resigned his post on Thursday.

It wasn’t knownSaturday if Bell has retained an attorney.
