Jackson County Community Theatre will conduct auditions for the annual dinner theater show at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 at Royal Off-the-Square Theatre, 121 W. Walnut St., Brownstown.
This year’s production is “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani.
Almost, Maine, is the name of a town (it was almost a town, not quite meeting all of the requirements). On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town.
As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, residents of Almost find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend — almost — in this midwinter night’s dream that blends romantic comedy and magical realism.
The show consists of nine vignettes about love, an appropriate theme for a February show. Information about the play may be found at almostmaine.com.
The cast requirements for the show are extremely flexible. At minimum, four actors could be cast (two men and two women playing multiple roles, as was done in the original production).
Each vignette, however, is independent, so as many as 19 men and women could be cast. Ages of the characters are from young adults to about any age upward. After all, everyone falls in love.
Stacey Williams is directing the show. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and perhaps some improvisation games.
No preparation is needed, but anyone trying out is asked to bring a photo to aid the director during casting. A casual snapshot is fine.
Those auditioning also should be prepared to list any known conflicts on a form provided at tryouts, so bringing one’s calendar is advised.
Dinner show dates are Feb. 16, 17, 23 and 24 at The Pines Evergreen Room south of Seymour. Feb. 18 is a nondinner matinee. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 2 at 812-358-5228 or online at jcct.org.
The annual dinner theater is sponsored by a grant from the Seymour Oktoberfest committee.
Rehearsals will begin the week of Dec. 11.
JCCT requires that everyone participating in shows be a member of JCCT for the current fiscal year (beginning in April of this year). Anyone not already a member can become one for $5.
