Schneck Medical Center recently began offering low-dose three-dimensional mammography exams.

The new exams, produced by Genius 3D MAMMOGRAPHY from Hologic, are superior to conventional digital mammograms, according to a news release from the Seymour hospital.

In a conventional mammogram, overlapping tissue can hide breast cancers, and normal breast tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks.

Clinical studies have demonstrated the positive benefits of the 3D exams, including earlier detection of small breast cancers that may be hidden in a conventional mammogram; greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities; fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests; greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors; and clearer images of dense breast tissue.

The exams are recommended for women of all ages and breast densities. Early detection saves lives.
