METAIRIE, La. — Authorities have charged a man with murder in the death of a Louisiana woman found strangled in her home on New Year’s Eve.

Jefferson Parish sheriff’s Lt. Jason Rivarde says 35-year-old Keston Mimmitt Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Paige Fuentes. Times-Picayune reports the 54-year-old woman was found dead on her bed Dec. 31 with a pillow over her face and a scarf and a leather purse strap wrapped around her neck.

Mimmitt’s defense attorney, John Thomas, said Wednesday his client denies killing Fuentes. Thomas said police have no physical evidence linking Mimmitt to the crime.

Thomas said Mimmitt denies confessing, though an investigator testified at a preliminary court hearing Oct. 26 that a witness told authorities the suspect had admitted to killing Fuentes.
