An Ohio man died as a result of a wreck Wednesday afternoon at U.S. 50 and County Road 1050W in far western Jackson County.

According to the Indiana State Police, a white 2013 Freightliner semi pulling a flatbed trailer, being driven by Christopher M. McClain, 24, of Merrillville, was traveling westbound on U.S. 50 when it collided with an eastbound red 2013 Volvo semi pulling a box trailer, being driven by Jerome M. Sharkey, 50, of West Chester, Ohio.

The vehicles struck each other in the roadway at about 4:15 p.m. as they passed through a construction zone where bridge work is taking place, according to a report by troopers Jacob Tolle and Matt Holley of the Indiana State Police Versailles Post crash reconstruction team.

Police said McClain’s trailer hit the cab of Sharkey’s vehicle. Sharkey was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, and he later was transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died as a result of his injuries, police said.

McClain was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing to determine which vehicle crossed the centerline and why the crash occurred, police said. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, police said, but toxicology tests are pending.

Tolle and Holley were assisted by Trooper Michael Thiron, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, Brownstown Volunteer Fire Department and Carr, Driftwood and Owen-Salt Creek township volunteer fire departments.
