A Seymour man died after wrecking his vehicle while on the way home late Wednesday night, police said.

Gary D. Reedy, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 3700 block of North County Road 600E in rural Seymour. Jackson County Sheriff’s Department officers Mark Holt and Jesse Hutchinson responded at 11:13 p.m. to the report of a man lying in the roadway. That report was made by a Crothersville woman who had been traveling south on County Road 600E when she drove up on the crash, according to police reports.

The woman ran to a nearby house to call 911, police said.

When officers arrived, they found Reedy lying in the roadway and began administering CPR until Jackson County Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over. Jackson County Coroner Mike Bobb pronounced Reedy dead at the scene.

Police said they believe Reedy was going home, traveling north on County Road 600E, when he drove his 2014 Chrysler van off of the east side of the roadway, corrected and then drove off of the west side of the roadway.

According to police reports, Reedy then drove south into a harvested cornfield. The van went airborne at least once before rolling and coming to rest upside down in a resident’s yard, police said.

Reedy was ejected from the vehicle, police said.

An autopsy on Reedy was conducted by Dr. George Weir at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour on Thursday. A cause of death and a toxicology report are pending and will take several weeks for results to be available.

The wreck remains under investigation, police said.
