CLEARFIELD, Pa. — A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison in the death of her boyfriend’s 2-year-old daughter while she was baby-sitting the child.

Twenty-two-year-old Jennifer Medzie was convicted of third-degree murder by a jury that acquitted her of a first-degree murder charge in the death of Sophia Lauder four years ago.

Authorities in Clearfield County said the child was shaken violently while Medzie was watching her at a Bradford Township home in November 2013. Medzie told police the child fainted in her arms.

Defense attorney Robert Donaldson sought a mitigated sentence Monday, saying his client had never been in trouble with the law.

But the child’s father emotionally asked for the maximum term so, in his words, she “doesn’t have a chance to do this again.”
