ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The wife of a North Carolina surgeon who was shot and killed last summer has turned herself in to police.

Local media outlets report the Buncombe County magistrate’s office said 67-year-old Brenda Kay McCutcheon turned herself in on Thursday. She is accused in the death of her husband, 64-year-old Dr. Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon, who died from a single gunshot would on July 16, 2016.

WLOS-TV in Asheville reported Brenda McCutcheon made her first court appearance on Thursday, when defense attorney Sean Devereux asked the judge if McCutcheon could have her handcuffs removed during the hearing. The judge denied the request.

Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams said Brenda McCutcheon, who is jailed on $750,000 bond, was indicted on first-degree murder charges. She has denied her involvement in her husband’s death.
