RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina police say a woman has died after her car fell several stories off an interstate spur.

The News & Observer in Raleigh reports that the single-vehicle accident happened early Sunday on I-495 near where it intersects with I-440 on the southeastern side of the city.

Police said that 42-year-old Darlene Bullock Branch was pronounced dead at the scene after officers arrived around 1:44 a.m. She was the only person in the vehicle.

The report says that Branch was believed to be driving at about 80 mph, which is over the speed limit.

Investigators say that her vehicle veered right and hit a concrete barrier, going another several hundred feet before falling from the interstate highway.

The report says that drugs or alcohol may have been involved.
