ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An escaped inmate captured in North Carolina after police found him sitting outside a doctor’s office will serve up to 20 years in prison for charges stemming from before and after his escape.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams’ office says 42-year-old Michael Lee Calloway was sentenced Monday to 15-20 years in prison. Calloway escaped Nov. 1 while being transported to a medical appointment and was captured the next morning.
Investigators say Calloway had grabbed an officer’s head and hit her head on the ground before fleeing.
The sheriff says as many as 100 law enforcement officers were involved in the search. Calloway was originally in custody on various charges, including breaking and entering, and had a prior criminal record.
