BROWNSTOWN

Three Brownstown Central Community School Corp. students were recognized during a recent board of trustees meeting in the administration office.

Receiving Student of the Month certificates were first-grader Sawyer Ritz, eighth-grader Grant Elliott and junior Ethan Bundy.

Sawyer was named Little Brave of the Month for good character by her teacher, Anna Spencer.

Spencer said Sawyer is “an incredibly caring and thoughtful girl,” including asking Spencer how a family member was doing following a surgery and consoling her peers when they are upset.

“Mrs. Spencer appreciates her kindness and politeness in the classroom and looks forward to seeing her smiling face every day,” Principal Chrystal Street said in reading Spencer’s nomination letter.

Elliott was selected by the eighth-grade teachers for exceeding the definition of a model student.

“He makes the teacher’s job very enjoyable because he is always willing to volunteer to help struggling students but also challenges the teacher to clarify content when he doesn’t always understand,” Principal Doug McClure said in sharing the teachers’ comments.

“Grant pays attention to every detail in the classroom and is extremely thorough when providing responses to questions,” they wrote. “He is also responsible when it comes to completing his work. He has never had a missing or incomplete assignment in his three years at the middle school.”

Elliott serves as president of the Tribal Council and recently worked with other members to create an educational initiative and present to grade-level tribe rooms during Red Ribbon Week. It focused on the negative impact drugs can have on the lives of those who choose to use them recreationally.

“Grant has led the way with that, presenting to their classmates as to the damages that drugs can do, so we’re very excited about that,” McClure said. “This is the first time we have tried something like this, but when you have students leading students, you know you’re headed in the right direction.”

Elliott also is involved in the school’s History Club and tennis team and participates in swimming.

“He is a tremendous leader and a great example for the younger students,” the teachers wrote.

Bundy was chosen for the honor by the high school’s social studies department.

He is involved in the Lettermen’s Club, football team and Teen Tutors.

“Ethan has challenged himself academically by enrolling and excelling in numerous Advanced Placement and dual credit courses at BCHS this school year,” Principal Joe Sheffer said in reading the teachers’ comments. “Ethan serves as an excellent role model to his fellow students at Brownstown Central High School.”
