Two Bartholomew County men were hospitalized Friday night after sustaining injuries when they were trapped inside a vehicle that rolled onto its side north of Seymour.

Gerald Wade Jr., 53, of Columbus was flown by StatFlight helicopter to I.U. Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a wreck involving the 1997 Toyota 4 Runner he was driving south in the 9000 block of State Road 11, according to a news release from Jackson County Officer Brad Barker.

A passenger in Wade’s vehicle, 49-year-old Mark Blewett of Columbus was first taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment of his injuries, but later was transferred to Methodist.

Barker said when he arrived at the scene of the wreck, reported at 6:48 p.m., he found Wade’s vehicle on its side in a harvested bean field and both men standing inside the sport utility vehicle.

Barker said he broke a window of the vehicle after the men said they couldn’t get out of it. Wade and Blewett were then able to climb out of the vehicle, Barker said.

Both men were treated by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel before being hospitalized.

A witness told Barker and Reserve Officer Eric Browalski, who assisted at the scene, that Wade’s vehicle left the west side of State Road 11, struck a raised access lane to the bean field, became airborne and landed in the field before coming to rest on its side, Barker reported.

That witness also said the driver of the sport utility vehicle did not appear to be impaired and was driving the posted speed limit when the wreck occurred.

Personnel with Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department, Seymour Fire Department and Hampton’s Towing assisted.
