ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a February death.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Buncombe County sheriff’s deputies arrested 55-year-old Robert Ernest Johnson on Tuesday, nearly 10 months after 62-year-old Robert Lee Thompson was found dead on the floor of his Asheville home.

A Feb. 4 search warrant says Thompson looked as if he had been recently beaten, and witnesses at the scene said he had been involved in a fight the night before.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Natalie Bailey said the sheriff’s office was awaiting the medical examiner’s final report before issuing any charges. She did not offer further comment.

The medical examiner’s report has not yet been released.

Johnson is being held on $30,000 bond. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
