CAMP VERDE, Ariz. — Yavapai County authorities say the death of a 36-year-old woman from the Village of Oak Creek appears to be a suicide.

County sheriff’s officials say deputies were dispatched Sunday to a gunshot injury call near the Montezuma Well.

A 51-year-old Sedona man called to report his girlfriend had a gunshot wound to her head.

Emergency crews treated the woman before she was taken to a Flagstaff hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Deputies say the couple was shooting at targets with a handgun.

The man was the only witness and it appears while the woman was preparing to shoot, her boyfriend turned away and she shot herself.

Investigators say it appears the death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The woman’s name is being withheld until her family is notified.
