KINGMAN, Ariz. — A man accused in the fatal beating of another inmate last month at the Mohave County Jail has been indicted for first-degree murder.

Authorities say a grand jury on Thursday indicted Gaven Timothy Robel.

County sheriff’s officials say Ryan Couch died last Sunday from head injuries suffered in the Nov. 20 assault by Robel, his cellmate.

Couch had been incarcerated since Nov. 2 for a probation violation.

After the attack on Couch, Robel was indicted on charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Sheriff’s officials say the Arizona Attorney General’s Office was asked to decide if charges against Robel would be upgraded after Couch’s death.

Robel originally was arrested on Nov. 15 for outstanding warrants involving fraud, forgery, fraudulent schemes and artifices, and acquisition of a narcotic drug.
