George Anthony, 90, of Seymour passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at his home.

Born Nov. 17, 1927, in Surprise, he was the son of Forrest Glen and Mary McDonald Anthony. On Sept. 18, 1947, in Greenwood, he married Virginia Jean McKinney, who preceded him in death Sept. 30, 2007.

After graduation from high school, George joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He then went to Northwood Institute in French Lick and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in hotel management.

George had a variety of careers during his life. He worked as a farmer, at Jay C Food Store and as a contractor holding a contract with the post office. He also owned an arcade for years in the old Vondee Theater. He was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Post 89 and Jackson Masonic Lodge 146.

George volunteered much in his life. He enjoyed anything Seymour Owls but especially football. He also volunteered for several years at Redding Elementary as a volunteer grandpa and to the Owls Parent Club helping make meals. He also was active in the Democratic election board for many years.

George’s greatest passions were Christmas, gardening, sports and enjoying his property at the river. He enjoyed decorating his many Christmas trees throughout his home and was an avid collector of nutcrackers and Santa Clauses. He also was a passionate gardener and would work many hours in his yard and flower beds.

Survivors include his children, Bob (Pam) Anthony and Tom (Christi) Anthony, both of Seymour, Barbara (Darrell) Whitmire of Webster, Kentucky, Bonita (Russ) Spray and Jeannie Anthony and Carmen Becerril, all of Seymour; and grandchildren, Heidi Quirino of Seymour, Virginia Quirino of Indianapolis, Paige Collins of Greenwood, Melissa Anthony of Columbus, Charlie (Amy) Pfiffer of Seymour, Sarah (Shannon) Ault of Seymour, Shawn (Caroline) Wescott of Sweden, Jackie Edwards of Florida, Brandy Edwards-Perry of Columbus, Travis Reynolds of Kentucky, Sara (Jered) Abner, Rusty Spray, John Spray, Nicholas Anthony and Crystal (Aaron) Rollins, all of Seymour, Tammi (Shawn) Ross of Freetown and Leslie Martinez, Chanel Martinez, Warren Martinez, Blaine (Danny) Stout, Kristin (Jacob) Leavy, Madge (Nick) Sons and Eric Cave, all of Seymour, Shana Baxter of Nashville and Casey Black of Seymour. George also leaves behind 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Jim Anthony of California; Marilyn Waltz of Taylorsville; Carol Anthony of Seymour; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two children, Mike Anthony and Debbie Black; grandchildren, Suzanne Anthony, Scott Westcott and Jamie Michelle Anthony; great-grandson, Patch Samuel Abner; siblings, Nancy Barnes and Katie Garvey; and two infant siblings, Boneda and Billy Ray.

The funeral service will be at noon Thursday at Woodlawn Life Celebration Centre in Seymour with Pastor Steve Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
