Brownstown Central Community School Corp.’s Students of the Month received certificates during a recent board of trustees meeting in the administration office.

Those recognized were fifth-grader Kyeirah Phillips, sixth-grader Haley Bowman and senior Stuart Hayden.

Kyeirah was nominated for Little Brave of the Month for math by her teacher, Mary Cobb.

“Math is a life skill and a never-ending display of numbers and problems that leads a learner to open many doors. Kyeirah Phillips is more than ready to open these doors,” Principal Chrystal Street said in reading Cobb’s comments.

“She is a continuous learner, always wanting and willing to learn,” Cobb wrote. “She not only understands the basic foundation of math, but she also understands there is more to math than just numbers. There is thinking, analyzing and using God-given gifts every day.”

Cobb said Kyeirah is “an incredible student.”

“She is very thoughtful and caring, loving to learn. In fact, she thinks that she might even become a teacher one day,” Cobb said. “I enjoy having Kyeirah in class and look forward to seeing her continuous growth throughout the school year.”

Street also had good things to say about Kyeirah.

“She is a darling young lady, bubbly personality, and she was also our DARE essay winner for our school, so she’s got a lot to give the community,” Street said. “Very pleased to have her as Little Brave of the Month.”

Haley’s sixth-grade teachers said she is “an amazing young lady and role model among her peers.”

“Students like Haley are rare,” Principal Doug McClure said in reading the teachers’ comments. “She’s an outstanding student. Her performance on assignments and tests is exemplary. She is personable and courteous and is an absolute pleasure to have in class.”

Haley also is a member of the Tribal Council.

“Although she is a sixth-grader, she gives ideas and suggestions during Tribal Council meetings, and her input is respected by the upperclassmen,” the teachers wrote. “She is patient and understanding when working with other students and is one of those students who makes a lasting impression on those around her. She truly exemplifies the traits of respect, responsibility and resourcefulness and is definitely deserving of the honor of BCMS Student of the Month.”

The high school math department recommended Hayden for the honor.

“Stuart is motivated, reliable, self-disciplined and conscientious in his mathematics studies,” Principal Joe Sheffer said in reading the teachers’ nomination letter. “He is truly intrigued on how different math concepts fit together. Stuart strives to look at each problem at every angle and analyze every situation asking, ‘Would this work?’ or ‘What if this would happen?’ When given a task, he starts working immediately, leading the other students in his group.”

Hayden is on the school’s Academic Super Bowl teams and participates in three sports.

“Stuart has displayed enthusiasm, determination, dedication and discipline necessary to achieve the goal that he seeks for himself in the future,” the teachers wrote.
