PATERSON, N.J. — Police say they are encouraging the driver who nearly injured multiple officers in a weekend pursuit to surrender to authorities.

Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnick says a number of departments were involved in a pursuit Sunday night. The Record reports the suspect, who has not been publicly identified, fled from police after being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.

Officer Eric Blesing says the driver also had an active arrest warrant. He says the driver nearly hit him when he drove off.

Berdnick says the driver nearly collided with a police cruiser during the pursuit, and eventually the chase was terminated for safety reasons.

Blesing says he saw the driver throw a small white package out the window during the pursuit. He says an arrest is expected shortly.
