Owls top Flashes

Seymour won its home-opener over Franklin Central 104.175-96.025 on Thursday at Gymnastics Lane.

The Owls took the top three spots in the all-around, with Kellsye Warner (35.075 points), Grace Furlow (33.9) and Avery DeHart (33.8) taking top honors.

Warner took first in the bars (8.425) and beam (8.875) while DeHart won the beam (8.875) and floor (9.375).

“The girls had a big night tonight,” Owls coach Angie Mellencamp said. “We have started to put in some of the big skills we would like to get fine tuned before tourney time.

Avery DeHart flipped a new vault which won her first place. Brett Kleber executed a bar release which earned her fourth place on bars. Kellsye Warner had a clean beam routine winning her first place. Grace Furlow put in a new back 1.5 in her floor routine placing her four on floor.”

Mellencamp was also impressed with some of her younger gymnasts.

“Several of the other team members put new skills in on beam including Nicole Elmore and Jailyn Aynes,” Mellencamp said. “The girls just need to get comfortable with skills to get the “no fall” beam routines we need for scores. I know being on their home equipment gave the girls some confidence tonight but we still are having falls from nerves.”

The Owls will next compete at Shelbyville on Thursday.

“The girls know what they need to do heading into next weeks meet against Shelbyville to pull up the team score,” Mellencamp said. “I am very proud of the team score tonight because almost all of ladies had a score that contributed. Looking at our next meet, we will definitely start raising our set numbers in the gym.”
