The Seymour varsity basketball teams made a clean sweep against Scottsburg on Saturday night in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

The Seymour girls opened up a 17-5 lead at the end of the first period and led all the way for a 59-51 victory, while the Seymour boys used a 6-0 run late in the second quarter to open up a 29-26 lead at the half and went on to a 57-49 win on senior night.

Girls post 10th win

The Seymour girls held a 45-33 lead going into the fourth period and saw their advantage close to 45-41 with 6:20 remaining before rebounding with a 12-0 run to regain the momentum.

Grace Meyer hit a 3-pointer to stop Scottsburg’s momentum, and Maddie Roark scored seven points over the next two minutes with her 3-pointer giving the Owls a 57-41 lead with 2:47 remaining.

“The first quarter we got into a rhythm both offensively and defensively,” Owls coach Jason Longmeier said. “We had Megan (Ritz) and Makenna (Fee) with two fouls so they were sitting a lot of the second quarter.

“We had line ups in there that we hadn’t played all year and we couldn’t get a rhythm in the second quarter and I felt the same way in the third quarter. I made a mistake in the book and they come out shooting free throws and right off the bat they get 4 free throws and cut our lead.

“The two things that really jumped out at me: If we would have done these two things it still would have been a 30-point win _ is finish at the rim and the turnovers. We had one turnover in the first quarter and we had a 17-5 lead. “

He said the 11 turnovers in the second half enabled the Warriors to cut down Seymour’s lead.

The Owls shot 19-for-57 and Longmeier said he felt like his team missed several high-percentage shots.

“We had a lot of really easy baskets tonight that we didn’t capitalize on,” he said.

Prior to the game, seniors Roark, Jami Nobbe and Jenna O’Neal and their parents were introduced.

“(Nobbe and O’Neal) have been here since their freshman year have really been a stability in our program,” Longmeier said. “They come to work every day and they’ve got great attitudes. Even though Jenna and Jami don’t play as many minutes as what they’d like to play, they show up every day and work hard, and they’re great teammates. We’re really proud of them for that.

“Maddie has been a great asset to our program. She’s came in and she’s been able to score the basketball, and defensively she does a good job for us as well. We’re glad she made the decision to come over here and help us out the last couple years.”

Roark topped all players with 25 points, including four 3-pointers.

Chase had 15 points and Fee was high rebounder with 11.

Jaylah Mays and Katie Horstman topped the Warriors (10-12) with 12 points each.

The Owls (10-11) will close their regular season Thursday at New Albany.

Boys even record

The Owls held a 23-17 lead following a layup by Alan Perry midway through the second quarter before the Warriors rallied to take a 24-23 lead.

Seymour came back with a 6-0 run, and led 29-26 at the half and remained in front the remainder of the game although the Warriors pulled within 49-45 with 2:18 remaining in the game.

Owls Coach Tyler Phillips said he liked the way his team took time off the clock and protected the lead in the fourth period.

The Owls made 22 of 30 free throws for the game, including 10 of 13 in the fourth quarter with Alan Perry and Zach Moore both hitting 5 of 6.

“That’s what seniors are supposed to do,” Phillips said. “Hitting 22 of 30 is going to win you a lot of games. We’ve got to continue to attack.

“I liked our resiliency. I thought the kids hung in there. They threw a wrinkle at us and we overcame it. They came out in a triangle-and-two and we thought they would chase Alan or Ty (McCory) and they came out and chased them both and we just had to adjust.”

Moore and Eddie Louden combined for four baskets and nine points in the first period to help the Owls to a 12-9 lead.

In the second period, Moore added his second 3-pointer, and Max Otte came up with a 4-point play to help keep the Owls in front the remainder of the first half.

Moore topped the Owls in scoring with a career-high 17 points. Phillips said Moore had his best game of the season “at both ends of the floor. Zach played well, played with a chip on his shoulder.”

Tiller Cummings had 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds and Perry also scored 10.

The Owls (6-6) will play a re-scheduled Hoosier Hills Conference game at Columbus East Wednesday night.

“We just need to continue to get better at what we’re doing,” Phillips said. “Nothing flashy, just continue to dig in and do what we do and do it better than we did the day before.”

Mitchell Prince topped the Warriors with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, but he was he only Scottsburg player in double figures.

The Owls shot 10-for-16 from the floor in the first half and were 16-for-32 for the game, while Scottsburg shot 20-for-42.
