VERO BEACH, Fla. — The death of a 2-year-old girl who was found unconscious in a backyard pool has been ruled an accidental drowning.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar tells TCPalm.com a preliminary review of the case by detectives determined the girl’s death was caused by accidental drowning.

Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers says family members found the toddler on Monday afternoon. A sheriff’s office report says dispatchers gave the family members CPR instructions over the phone until deputies arrived on scene and continued CPR.

Emergency officials took the girl to a hospital about 10 minutes after the first 911 call, but she was pronounced dead by the hospital’s doctors.

The toddler’s name has not been released.
