SHOSHONE, Idaho — Idaho State Police say a Shoshone police officer shot and wounded a 30-year-old man who fired at the officer following a traffic stop and chase.

Idaho State Police spokesman Tim Marsano tells The Times-News that the unnamed officer stopped Jesus J. Malagon at about 1 a.m. Tuesday for a traffic violation in Shoshone.

Marsano says that Malagon drove away from the traffic stop but crashed not far away.

Marsano says Malagon fired shots at the officer, who returned fire and struck Malagon at least once. The officer wasn’t injured.

Malagon was flown to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

A hospital spokesman didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Wednesday.
