Furthering education: 6 scholarships available for Jennings students

Eligible Jennings County High School seniors who attended Hayden Elementary School and are planning to attend college or a vocation trade school can apply for six scholarships.

Applications are being accepted and can be picked up in the high school guidance office. For information about the scholarships, contact the Hayden Historical Museum by calling 812-592-8445 or sending an email to [email protected].

The available scholarships are:

Michael Euler Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school and must have attended four or more years at Hayden Elementary. This award is in memory of Michael Euler, a former Hayden student and the last Spencer Township resident to lose his life while serving his country. The Hayden High School Alumni Association sponsors this scholarship, and the award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $800.

Apphia Wohrer Gerth Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. This award will be given to a senior who was a member of the Hayden Little Hoosier Historians while they were attending Hayden Elementary.

This scholarship was established in memory of Apphia Wohrer Gerth, a former schoolteacher and one of the founding directors of the Hayden Historical Museum. She took a great interest in the activities of the Little Hoosiers and was one of its biggest supporters. This scholarship is made possible through the Jennings County Community Foundation and the Glen and Ruth Morrison Endowment Fund, which was created in their honor for the Hayden Historical Museum. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $250.

Martha M. Vogel Memorial Scholarship

Students who apply must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school and must have attended four or more years at Hayden Elementary.

The family and friends of Martha Vogel, a 1997 Jennings County High School graduate who lost her life in an automobile accident in 1998, established this award with the Jennings County Community Foundation. A plaque and $500 will be awarded to two recipients.

John & Alice Wohrer Memorial Scholarship

The award is given to a senior who attended four or more years at Hayden Elementary. Preference will be given to the applicant who has been admitted to a college or junior college with the intention of gaining a degree in the field of education.

This scholarship was established in memory of John and Alice Wohrer, who were great promoters of education in Spencer Township during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the Wohrer descendants from across the country joined together to make this scholarship possible and established the fund with the Jennings County Community Foundation. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $1,400.

Pat Sullivan/Rodger Ruddick Honorary Scholarship

Students who apply must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school and must have attended four years or more at Hayden Elementary. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Bessenger established this scholarship to honor Pat Sullivan and Rodger Ruddick for their continued involvement with the youth of Hayden and the Spencer Township community. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $500.

Edward & Marjorie Kehrt Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. They also must be a resident of Spencer Township and have attended four or more years at Hayden Elementary School.

The scholarship was established with the Jennings County Community Foundation by the Kehrt estate and is in memory of Edward and Marjorie Kehrt. Edward was an active volunteer in the community, serving on the Spencer Township Fire Department and other local organizations. Marjorie was a longtime cook at Hayden Elementary School. This award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $1,200.
