Top golf teacher will be guest speaker at event

Recognized as one of the best golf teachers in Indiana by the PGA and Golf Digest, Colby Huffman spent four years on the Purdue University golf team honing his skills.

He now serves as an assistant men’s golf coach at IUPUI and is co-director of instruction and Golf Channel Academy lead coach at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood.

Huffman, who lives in Zionsville, will visit Jackson County next week to share his story of success and encourage people to follow their passions. He will serve as the special guest speaker Thursday at the Purdue Club of Jackson County’s annual dinner and scholarship auction.

Following his time in college, Huffman spent time playing professionally on the PGA Tour de Las Americas, Golden Bear Tour, Hurricane Tour and the Maverick Tour, where he competed against many of today’s PGA Tour members. After his stint of playing professionally, he became the state scoring record holder for Indiana’s Playing Ability Test — the scoring criteria to be a PGA of America member.

Besides a golf coach and instructor, Huffman is a sport psychologist and best-selling author of the book “Train for Golf Like an Olympian.”

Purdue Club President Chuck Gordon said Huffman was an Academic All-American while a student-athlete at Purdue and has good stories to tell.

The event will be at Celebrations, 357 Tanger Blvd., Suite 101, at Shops at Seymour.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., and a meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. There will be silent and live auction items and raffles.

Tickets may be purchased from any Purdue Club board member or online at eventbrite.com. The cost is $20 each or guests can reserve a table of eight for $135.

You don’t have to be a member of the Purdue Club or a Purdue graduate to attend.

All money raised from the event will go to scholarships to support Jackson County students from all five high schools planning to attend Purdue University in the fall. Last year’s dinner raised nearly $7,500, Gordon said.

Besides the dinner, the club organizes a student send-off in June and participates in the annual Seymour Oktoberfest parade and Jackson County United Way’s Day of Caring.

According to the fall 2016 Purdue Data Digest, there were 721 Purdue alumni in Jackson County and 70 Jackson County students enrolled at the college.

Although Purdue is best known for its agriculture, aviation, engineering and veterinary medicine schools, it offers more than 200 majors from 10 different schools of study.
