BROWNSTOWN

Vivian Kuehn Spurgeon passed from this life in peace on February 20, 2018, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, just three weeks prior.

Vivian’s life was marked with love, faith, and service to others. She never hesitated to volunteer for her church, her children’s school activities and interests, and her community. She was born on December 4, 1926 at her home in Honeytown. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown, where she served as secretary of the church for 25 years. Vivian graduated from Brownstown High School in 1945. She began her career with Coca Cola Bottling in Columbus and eventually worked for Prudential Insurance. After her marriage, she maintained a home, raised children and livestock, and farmed with her husband.

Vivian was a legacy. She was a sustaining member of Tri Kappa Sorority, served as Cub Scout, Brownie and 4-H leaders, and volunteered at the Jackson County Historical Society. She was especially proud of her work on the books of Jackson County History. Along with her twin sister, Helen, she volunteered her sewing and mending skills at Schneck Memorial Hospital, Seymour. Her beauty, grace, and faith never wavered through a tornado, illness, death of dear ones, loved ones in military service, and challenging children.

She married Ralph L. Spurgeon on January 28, 1951, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown. He preceded her in death on January 28, 2018. Vivian was a loving daughter of Stella and Martin Kuehn, both of whom preceded her in death. They were the parents of eight children of which six were twins. Vivian and her sister, Helen Schlehuser, were the only set of identical twins.

Vivian is survived by children: Jill Ann (William) Weber of Mitchell, Paul Duane Spurgeon of Vallonia, and Laura Mae Lamb of Seymour; grandchildren: Mitchell Landon Crider, Adilee Mae (Tim) Phegley, Carley Nicole Lamb, and Jenna Mae Lamb; great-grandchildren: Hallie Mae Phegley, Trey David Phegley, and Collin Dean Phegley; two sisters: Lois Boswell of Indianapolis and Larna Smith of Texas; and sisters-in-law: Janet Kuehn, Shirley Lehman, Ethel Kuehn, Maxine Spurgeon and Chris Ebert. Vivian will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings and friends.
