Nominations sought for Wall of Fame

Seymour High School is accepting nominations of alumni for recognition on its Wall of Fame this year.

Started by the school’s Renaissance program in 1996, the Wall of Fame is a way for the school and community to come together to promote and recognize achievements of past graduates and to celebrate the mark they have made on the world.

To be considered a candidate for Wall of Fame honors, nominees must have graduated at least 10 years ago, have been recognized by their peers as highly successful in their chosen career field and have received district, state, national or international commendations or awards for their contributions.

Nominees can be living or deceased.

A committee of teachers and community members evaluate the nominations and choose the honorees.

Teresa Thompson, the school’s new dean of students, is handling the nomination process and induction ceremony, scheduled to take place in September.

The Wall of Fame not only recognizes the accomplishments of former students but gives current students role models and something to work toward.

It was started by former high school librarian Betty Skelton and assistant principal Rosemary Jenkinson, both of whom are now deceased, and retired principal Jim McCormick.

Inductions used to be every two years but have not been conducted as regularly since 2008.

Past inductees’ photos and information are displayed on a large plaque located in the lobby outside of the school’s auditorium.

The most recent time the school conducted an induction was 2015. At that time, three alumni were bestowed with the honor. They were Dr. Joseph W. Conner, Joyce Stout Irwin and U.S. Navy Capt. Paul S. Snodgrass.

A total of nine classes have been inducted. Notable Wall of Famers include musician John Mellencamp, former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, retired Bridgestone of Americas CEO Mark Emkes and physician Dr. Joseph Black.

Nomination forms are available at the high school or can be downloaded from the high school’s website at scsc.k12.in.us and printed and mailed to Wall of Fame Committee, Renaissance Director-Dean of Students Teresa Thompson, 1350 W. Second St., Seymour IN 47274.

Besides the nomination form, letters of recommendation and newspaper or magazine articles should be included to corroborate the candidate’s credentials.

Nominations are due by March 30.
