UPDATED at 3:26 P.M.

A 37-year-old Seymour man died late Thursday after he was struck by a vehicle in the 1200 block of East Tipton Street.

Claudio Antele-Pelayo of the 1300 block of Pin Oak Drive was pronounced dead at the scene by Jackson County Coroner Mike Bobb.

Police Chief Bill Abbott said Antele-Pelayo, who worked at a restaurant in Jackson Park Shopping Center, was struck as he and a co-worker were crossing north on Tipton Street after leaving work.

George Douglas, 65, of Seymour told investigators he saw the first man “dart” across the street but did not see the second man and hit him. That was at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Douglas, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet 1500 truck west, was not cited, and no drugs or alcohol were found, Abbott said.

A blood test, however, will be completed since there was a fatality, Abbott said.

An external autopsy conducted Friday morning at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour by Dr. George Weir found that Antele-Pelayo died of blunt force trauma, Bobb said.

The police department’s accident reconstruction team of Sgt. Mike Cooper, Cpl. Jason Wynn, Detective Sgt. C.J. Foster and Lt. John Watson is investigating the wreck.
