Nature groups promoting spring events

Birds of a feather flock together, and that’s just what nature groups are doing this spring.

These groups, including state parks, wildlife refuges and area nonprofits, are sharing an important message: There are a multitude of opportunities for spending time in nature this spring. Best of all, most events are free for everyone to enjoy.

The events range from art classes to trivia nights to wildflower walks and even chances to catch frogs.

Two of the upcoming programs are in the Seymour area.

The first is sponsored by Oak Heritage Conservancy and will be a bluebell wildflower walk April 21 at Lebline Woods Nature Preserve in Rockford. Participants are encouraged to bring their hiking boots and their cameras, as the forested preserve is covered in bluebells in spring.

While not rugged, this hike requires a half-mile walk into the preserve from the road, and there is no trail in the preserve, so hikers will deal with some vines, branches, etc. Come ready to cover at least 2 to 3 miles through the fields and forest. Meet at Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, 2001 N. Ewing St., Seymour.

The second, Wings Over Muscatatuck, will be May 12 at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 12985 E. U.S. 50, Seymour. The festival offers children’s activities, tours and more all focused on migrating birds that visit the refuge. The event also includes a native plant sale.

These events are just two of many happening within an hour or so drive of Seymour. The groups are hoping that their efforts to spread the word will mean more area residents participate in hands-on nature programs throughout southeast Indiana.

Each week, the conservancy will publish a list of upcoming nature events going on across southeast Indiana. The events vary, but they all give people a chance to get outside and unplug. The partners on this project also will be sharing and cross-promoting the events.

Here are just a few of the other upcoming events:

  • Today: Spring waterfowl migration field trip at Oxbow Preserve in Lawrenceburg
  • March 31: Blue moon hike at Charlestown State Park
  • April 3 through 6: Art in Nature classes at Versailles State Park
  • April 14: Nature trivia at Amack’s Well in Batesville
  • April 20: Bird tour at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge
  • April 22: Earth Day at Clifty Falls State Park in Madison
  • May 5: Forest and wildflower ramble at Sunman’s Woods at Batesville
  • May 27: Full moon hike at Charlestown State Park

The conservancy, a nonprofit group that serve southeast Indiana, is helping bring these groups together.

“We want to make sure that any time someone wants to get outside and enjoy the natural world, they know about a fun option nearby,” said Liz Brownlee, executive director of the conservancy.

“We hope the message spreads far and wide, and that lots of folks will come out and play in nature,” said Joe Robb, project leader of Big Oaks and Muscatatuck.
