The 19th annual Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale is set for May 18 to 20.

From its beginnings in North Vernon in 2000, the sale now has participation from California to Maryland, including running through Jackson County.

Participation is open to everyone, and there are no national fees for participation. Some communities officially organize for the event, while in other sections of the country organization is at the individual level.

Churches, clubs, schools and organizations are welcome to join the sale and use the event as a fundraiser.

Tom Taylor, national organizer for the event, said the sale allows individuals to earn some extra money, while it allows others to find affordable bargains.

“Another benefit of the U.S. 50 Yard Sale is that it is the purest form of recycling through reuse,” Taylor said. “The sale also helps the environment by reducing the number of items that might otherwise go to a landfill.”

Participants are reminded that all sales are subject to applicable local laws, and all vendors should allow for ample parking along with easy and safe access to and from the highway.
