Joseph V. Ballard, 90, of Brownstown passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 22, 1928, in Jackson County to John A. and Pearlie L. Baughman Ballard, who preceded him in death. He married Evelyn J. Umphress on April 10, 1955, and she survives.

Joe graduated from Brownstown High School in 1946. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having entered in 1948 and discharged in 1949. He was also a lifelong farmer on his family farm. Joe was a school bus driver for Brownstown Central Community School Corp. for 22 years. His greatest joy in life was his family, especially following his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their activities. Joe loved and was an active member of Brownstown Christian Church. If the doors were open, he was there. He also was an avid fan of Jeff Gordon.

Joe is survived by his children, Alan B., Sheila J. (Jeff) Blevins, Sheryl A. (Tom) Jackson, Sharon J. (Roger) Hurt, Shelby J. (Jerry) Hounshel and Shawna L. (Adam) Sutherland.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Clayton (Karmen) Blevins, Calan (Adam Quate) Blevins, Reece Jackson, Scott (Amy) Jackson, Kaycee Jackson, Hayleigh (Chris) Neumann, Whitney Hurt, Kortnie (Ryan) Kinnick, Kinzie (Clint) Grace, Klint (Bev) Soladine, Carrie (John) Grimes, Sarah (Chad Stancil) Geis, Logan (Bradi) Sutherland and Tanner Sutherland.

Joe is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Ava Blevins, Olivia Blevins, Paxton Jackson, Luke Jackson, Lainey Jackson, Payton Jackson, Maylee Cardinal, Alayna Kinnick, Adalyn Kinnick, Annslee Kinnick, Coleton Grace, Cade Grace, Kaylee Grace, Kasey Sutherland and Anna Sutherland; and a sister, Jeannie Murphy.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, John, and sisters, Janet Ballard, Myrtle Frederickson and Josephine Baker.

Friends may call at Winklepleck & Brock Funeral Home in Brownstown on Wednesday, April 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 19 at Brownstown Christian Church with the funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor Mitchell McIntyre will officiate. Burial will be at Smallwood Cemetery.

Full military graveside rites will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47 and Korean & Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Memorials may be made to the Brownstown Christian Church benevolence fund or Hoosier Christian Village.

Casket bearers will be Clayton Blevins, Reece Jackson, Scott Jackson, Klint Soladine, Logan Sutherland and Tanner Sutherland.
