County Clash: Owls beat Braves by 44 strokes

The weather conditions finally proved favorable on the links.

In this match up, the rain gear, and extra layers of clothing, stayed at home, and the golfers just focused on one hole at a time.

In a contest between Jackson County foes on Friday the home team emerged victorious, as Seymour defeated its U.S. 50 rivals from 10 miles down the road, Brownstown Central, 168-212 at Shadowood Golf Course.

Battling poor weather the first few weeks of the season, both teams were happy to see a change in conditions.

“We’re starting to play better because the weather is getting better,” Seymour assistant coach Brian Tidd said.

Playing on the back nine holes, Seymour senior Tyler Bullard and freshman Owen Marshall tied for medalist honors by shooting 4-over-par 40s.

Ethan Dippold was next with a 43, Hunter Browning carded 45 and Connor Hinton shot 47 for the Owls.

The match was only the second dual that Seymour has competed in this season. The rest of the Owls’ schedule has been comprised of 18-holes tournaments and practices due to cancellations.

Tidd said the long ball was working for the Owls against BCHS.

“I think our drives were better,” Tidd said. “I think most of our guys are hitting drives better because they’re getting to practice more. We actually get to go out on the course more. The chipping and putting has been better because of it, too. As we move forward we need to keep working on our chipping and putting.”

Brayton Hattabaugh led Brownstown by carding a 45.

Lucas VonDielingen shot 54, Chayse Shell totaled 57, Jalen Curry added 56 and Reid Campbell rounded out the Braves’ starting five with 59.

The youth-filled Braves are shedding strokes each competetion.

Braves assistant coach Brent Hattabaugh said the team improved by 14 strokes since the season-opening Seymour Invitational.

“They’re hitting the ball off the tee better, but they really need to work on the chipping and putting,” he said. “They’re getting better. Only two out of the eight players we have played varsity last year. It’s all new for six of the kids so they’re only going to get better.”

Brownstown Central will play at Scottsburg with Austin on Monday before both teams go to the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational at Otis Park a week from today.
