Jackson County 4-H to offer two STEM camps

Jackson County 4-H, Purdue Polytechnic Columbus and the Jackson County Learning Center are offering two 4-H camps this summer that focus on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

Both camps are open to elementary school children enrolled in grades 3 through 6. There is a limit of 30 participants in each camp.

4-H STEAM Camp will be June 11 through 15. Hands-on experiments and learning activities using 4-H’s slogan of “Learn by doing” will be the focus each day.

Topics will include food and plant science, technology with the opportunity to create a fitness tracker, engineering design and creating various structures, art lessons and using math to solve real-world problems and challenges.

The Advanced Lego Robotics Camp will be June 18 through 22 and will involve hands-on experiences focusing on using Legos to learn about robotics. Campers will build a Lego robot, attach sensors to it and learn how to control its movement through computer programming.

The robotics camp is led by Joe Fuehne, associate professor of mechanical engineering technology and director of Purdue Polytechnic Columbus.

Both camps will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the Jackson County Learning Center, 323 Dupont Drive, Seymour.

The cost for each camp is $50, which includes 4-H registration, a camp shirt, supplies and materials and snacks. Checks should be made payable to Extension Education Fund. Registration forms are available from the Purdue Extension Jackson County office or downloaded by visiting bit.ly/JackonCounty4H2018ScienceCamps.
